Best for

  • Parents and homeschoolers who want a short page of sight words each day
  • Teachers who need quick center work, homework or a sheet for one child's missed words
  • Anyone who wants printable sight word sheets without accounts, credits or watermarks

Not the best fit for

  • A full phonics programme: these sheets practice words, so pair them with decodable books and phonics lessons
  • Sentences, stories or word searches: this generator is word-based
  • UK Letters and Sounds or Year 1 and 2 exception word lists: type those words in yourself

How it compares

Fixed PDF libraries (K5 Learning, Super Teacher Worksheets, Education.com)
Many designed sheets, but each is a fixed list, and several limit free use through memberships or download caps. Here you choose the exact words and nothing needs an account.
Canva and Twinkl
Good for decorated layouts and themed packs, but you place and type every word yourself, and some resources need an account or membership. Here the guide lines, dotted tracing and answer key are made for you.
Etsy and Teachers Pay Teachers bundles
Polished themed packs per list, bought as a fixed set. Here you can change a single word, add a child's own words and reprint a fresh find-and-circle page for free.

Why these sight words worksheets fit the words your child needs

Three things a fixed PDF cannot do.

Pick Dolch or Fry and tick the words

Most printable sight words worksheets are a finished sheet for one fixed list. Here you choose the list first: the five Dolch levels from pre-primer to 3rd grade, the 95 Dolch nouns, or the first, second or third Fry hundred. Then tap the words your child is working on, or type your own, and the page is written in a second. Ten words fill one page.

Read, trace and write on proper guide lines

Every row starts with the word to read aloud, then dotted copies to trace and empty lines to write the word alone. The sight word practice sheets use a rounded school font with a single-story a and g, plus top, middle and baseline guide lines. Choose one to three dotted copies and one to three blank lines per word.

Find and circle, with an answer key

The find-and-circle pages put each target word in a box and hide it two or three times in a row of look-alike words such as was, saw and say. Press New find-and-circle rows for a different page, and switch on the answer key to get a copy with every match circled in red, so checking takes a minute.

How to make sight words worksheets in four steps

From a blank page to printed sight word practice with an answer key in about two minutes.

  1. Pick a ready-made set or a list

Start from a set such as Dolch Primer or Fry first 100, or open the word list and choose the level yourself. Dolch levels are commonly grouped as pre-primer and primer for pre-K and kindergarten, then one level each for grades 1, 2 and 3. Fry's own guidance is the first 100 words by the end of grade 1, then one more hundred a year.

    • Not sure where to start? Use the Starter set of ten pre-primer words.
    • These are common groupings, not official standards, so move up or down to fit your child.
  2. Tick the words and choose the activities

Tap words to add or remove them, or press First 10 or Random 10. Type extra words in the box. Switch Read, Trace, Write and Find and circle on or off. Teaching a few words at a time works best: Fry presents words in sets of five, and Understood suggests groups of five words a day, so a short page is enough.

    • Leave Write on and Trace at two copies for a first pass.
    • Pick the words your child missed last time instead of the whole list.
  3. Check the preview and make a new find page

Use Previous and Next to look at every page. If you want a different find-and-circle page, press New find-and-circle rows. Switch on the answer key and you get extra pages with every match circled.

    • Letter case can be changed on the fly, for example lowercase first and Capitalized later.
    • The answer key pages come after the student pages.
  4. Print at actual size or download

Print at 100% on plain paper, or download a PDF or PNG. Dotted words are easiest to trace in pencil. Keep each session short: Shanahan suggests only about 3 to 5 minutes a day of sight word practice, alongside phonics and real reading.

    • Slip a page into a plastic sleeve and use a dry-erase marker to practice again.
    • A4 and US Letter are both supported in Paper and colors.

Sight words worksheets FAQ

Answers about Dolch and Fry lists, how many words to teach, answer keys and printing.

Are these sight words worksheets really free?

Yes. There is no paid tier, no account, no credits and no watermark on the PDF, PNG or print. The sheets are made in your browser, so the words you choose are never uploaded.

What are sight words?

Sight words are common words children are taught to recognize quickly, such as the, and, was and said. Many of them are hard to sound out. They are also called high-frequency words, and in England some are called tricky words or common exception words. These sheets give a child repeated, short practice with them.

How many sight words should a kindergartener know?

There is no single official number. Common Core RF.K.3.c asks kindergartners to read common high-frequency words by sight, such as the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do and does. Literacy researcher Timothy Shanahan suggests about 20 words by the end of kindergarten, and many teachers use the Dolch pre-primer and primer words (92 in all) as a guide.

What is the difference between Dolch and Fry sight words?

Dolch (1936) has 220 service words in five levels from pre-primer to 3rd grade, plus 95 nouns, and was built from children's books of his time. Fry (1957, revised 1980) lists the 1000 most frequent words in print in order of frequency, in groups of 100. The two overlap: 165 of the 220 Dolch words appear in Fry's first 300. This generator has both lists.

Which sight words should I teach first?

Start with the Dolch pre-primer list or Fry's first 25 to 50 words: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it. Take a few at a time, in sets of five, and move on when a child reads them without sounding out. Use the Starter set of ten words, or tick just the words your child missed.

How many sight words should a first grader know?

Fry's rule of thumb is the first 100 words by the end of grade 1, then one more 100 a year. The Dolch 1st grade list has 41 words and the primer list 52. Common Core RF.1.3.g asks first graders to read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words. Use the Fry first 100 set to practice them.

How do I make custom sight words worksheets?

Open Choose the words, type or paste words into Your own words, separated by commas, spaces or new lines, and the page updates at once. You can mix list words and your own words, up to 60 words per set, which is useful for names and spelling words.

How do I practice sight words at home?

Keep it short: about 3 to 5 minutes a day is enough, according to Shanahan. Read the word together, trace it, write it from memory and then play find and circle. Choose 5 to 10 words, reread the same words in a book, and drop a word once it is easy.

Do the find-and-circle pages have an answer key?

Yes. Switch on Add answer key pages for find and circle in Paper and colors. You get a copy of each find page with every matching word circled in red. The read, trace and write pages have no key because the answer is the word itself.

Do you have UK tricky words or Letters and Sounds lists?

Not as ready-made lists yet. The word lists here are Dolch and Fry. For Reception and Year 1 tricky words or common exception words, type or paste your school's list into Your own words, and the page makes the same read, trace, write and find sheets on A4.
