Word list

Lists go from simple CVC words to word families, digraphs and blends. Words with a picture show it on the sheets.

Start here. Short a is the first vowel in most schemes (Letters and Sounds Phase 2, set 1). Words begin with easy-to-stretch sounds like m, s, n, f and r (mat, man, sad) and end with ck and sh words (back, cash).

Activities on the sheets

  • Sound it out: one box per sound, then the whole word to read, a dashed copy to trace and an empty line to write.
  • Beginning sound: the word with its first sound missing and three letters to circle.
  • Middle sound: the vowel is missing; circle the right one out of three.
  • Ending sound: the last sound is missing; circle the right letter.
  • Find and circle: a row of look-alike words with the match to circle, plus an answer key.

Words that have a picture show it next to the word; the others show the word on a small card.

Best for

  • Parents and homeschoolers who want a short, targeted page of phonics practice a day
  • Teachers, tutors and TAs who need quick centre work, homework or a sheet for one child's tricky sounds
  • Anyone who wants printable phonics worksheets without accounts, credits or watermarks

Not the best fit for

  • A full phonics programme: these sheets practise words, so pair them with decodable books and a structured phonics lesson
  • Teaching vowel teams and long vowels (ai, ee, oa) or multi-syllable words: the built-in lists stop at CVC, digraph and blend words, although you can type those words yourself
  • Cursive or joined-up handwriting: the sheets use simple print

How it compares

Fixed PDF libraries (K5 Learning, Super Teacher Worksheets, Education.com, Twinkl)
Many designed pages and grade-by-grade collections, but each page is a fixed list, and several use a membership, an account or a download cap for free use (Education.com's free tier is three downloads a month). Here you choose the exact words and nothing needs an account.
Other free generators (such as Classeem's CVC generator)
Also free with no sign-up, and good for simple three-letter CVC words. This generator adds picture rows, five activity types, an answer key for the sound and find pages, digraph, blend and word family lists, and PDF, PNG and print on Letter or A4.
Canva, Etsy and Teachers Pay Teachers
Polished themed packs or a blank design page. Packs are a fixed set you buy or log in to download; a blank page means typing every word and drawing every sound box yourself. Here sound boxes, dotted tracing and the answer key are made for you.

Why these phonics worksheets fit the sounds your child is learning

Three things a fixed PDF cannot do.

Pick CVC words with pictures and tick the ones you need

Most printable phonics worksheets are one finished sheet for one fixed set of words. Here you choose the list first: short a, e, i, o or u, mixed CVC words, word families, digraphs, blends or picture words for beginning sounds. Then tap the words your child is working on, or type your own. Ten words fill a page and each list shows its word count.

A tablet showing the phonics worksheets word picker with short a words ticked next to a printed worksheet with the same words

Sound boxes to read, trace and write

On the Sound it out page every word is split into one box per sound with a dot under each: c, a, t. Children tap each dot, slide a finger under the word, then read the whole word, trace the dotted copy and write it on the line. Digraphs share a box, so ship is three boxes (sh, i, p), which matches how the sounds are taught.

A printed phonics worksheets page with sound boxes and dots under each box, then the word to read, a dotted copy to trace and a line to write

Beginning, middle and ending sounds, with an answer key

Each sound page shows the word with one sound missing, such as _at, c_t or ca_, a picture or word card on the left, three letters to circle and a line to write the word on the right. The wrong choices come from the other words in your list. Find and circle hides the target word two or three times among look-alikes like cat, cot and cut. Switch on the answer key for a copy with every correct answer in red.

How to make phonics worksheets in four steps

From a blank page to printed phonics practice with an answer key in about two minutes.

  1. Pick a ready-made set or a word list

Start with a set such as Starter set: short a CVC words, or open the word list and choose yourself. A common order is short a first, then i, o, e and u, which is the order the UK Letters and Sounds guidance introduces the vowels. Move to word families, then digraphs (sh, ch, th, ck) and blends (stop, jump) when CVC words are easy.

    • Not sure where to start? Use the Starter set of ten short a words.
    • Follow your own school's scheme if it has one: type or paste its words into Your own words.
  2. Tick the words and choose the activities

Tap words to add or remove them, or press First 10 or Random 10. Switch Sound it out, Beginning sound, Middle sound, Ending sound and Find and circle on or off. For a first pass use Sound it out and Beginning sound; add Middle sound for the vowel, which is the hardest sound to hear.

    • Choose only the words your child got wrong last time instead of a whole list.
    • Turn Show pictures on for the youngest children; they can name the picture and then the first sound.
  3. Check the preview and add the answer key

Use Previous and Next to look at every page. Press New letter choices for different circle options, and switch on the answer key to get extra pages with every correct letter or word in red. Pick lowercase, Capitalized or UPPERCASE and a header color.

    • Lowercase first, then Capitalized or UPPERCASE later, helps children read both.
    • The answer key pages come after the student pages.
  4. Print at actual size or download

Print at 100% (actual size) on plain paper, US Letter or A4, or download a PDF or PNG. Say each sound out loud while tapping the dots, and keep a session short; many schools run daily phonics sessions of about 15 to 20 minutes, and one page of ten words fits well inside that.

    • Slip a page into a plastic sleeve and use a dry-erase marker to practise again.
    • Say the sounds, not the letter names: /k/ /a/ /t/, not see-ay-tee.

Phonics worksheets FAQ

Answers about CVC words, teaching order, digraphs and blends, answer keys and printing.

Are these phonics worksheets really free?

Yes. There is no paid tier, no account, no credits and no watermark on the PDF, PNG or print. The sheets are made in your browser, so the words you choose are never uploaded.

What are CVC words?

CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant: a short word with three sounds and a short vowel in the middle, such as cat, dog, sun, pen or pig. They are usually the first words children blend. Words like duck, bell and ship have more than three letters but still three sounds, so here ck, ll and sh each sit in one sound box.

What order should I teach phonics in?

The UK Department for Education's Letters and Sounds guidance (2007) teaches Phase 2 in up to 6 weeks, one set of letters a week: s a t p, then i n m d, then g o c k, then ck e u r, then h b f l. Phase 3 follows in up to 12 weeks with j v w x, y z zz qu and the digraphs ch, sh, th and ng, and Phase 4 (4 to 6 weeks) covers adjacent consonants such as stop and jump. In the US, Common Core RF.1.3.a asks first graders to know common consonant digraphs after kindergarten letter sounds and short vowels.

How many CVC words should a kindergartener know?

No official standard gives a number. Common Core RF.K.3 asks kindergartners to know one-to-one letter-sound correspondences, to associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings for the five major vowels, to read common high-frequency words by sight, and to distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ (cat and cot). A practical goal is to read short words for each of the five vowels; each short vowel list here has 33 to 39 words to pick from.

How do I make phonics worksheets with my own word list?

Open Choose the words, then type or paste words into Your own words, separated by commas, spaces or new lines. The page updates at once. You can mix list words and your own words, up to 60 words per set. The letter pairs sh, ch, th, wh, ck, ng, qu, ll, ss, ff and zz stay in one sound box; unusual spellings such as said are split letter by letter, so use the find-and-circle page for those.

What is the difference between digraphs and blends?

A digraph is two letters that make one sound: sh in ship, ck in duck, ng in ring. In a blend each letter keeps its own sound: s and t in stop, m and p in jump. The generator keeps a digraph in one box, so ship has three boxes (sh, i, p) while stop has four (s, t, o, p). The Digraphs list has 48 words and the Blends list 48; England's guidance calls blends adjacent consonants.

What are word families in phonics?

A word family is a group of words that share the same ending, called a rime: cat, hat, mat all end in -at. Wylie and Durrell (1970) found 37 common rimes in about 500 words in early reading books. The Word families list has 20 rimes with three words each (-at, -an, -ap, -ag, -ack, -et, -en, -ed, -ell, -ig, -in, -ip, -it, -ill, -og, -op, -ot, -ug, -un, -ut) and a second list adds 10 more.

How long should a phonics lesson be, and how many words a day?

No curriculum document sets a fixed number of words. Letters and Sounds says its word banks are not to be worked through slavishly but selected from as needed, and it paces by letter sets, one set a week in Phase 2. Many schools run daily phonics sessions of about 15 to 20 minutes. One page of ten words is a sensible amount for a day; reprint the same words with new letter choices the next day.

Do the phonics worksheets have an answer key?

Yes. Switch on Add answer key pages for the sound and find pages. You get a copy of each beginning, middle, ending and find-and-circle page with the correct letter or word in red. The Sound it out pages have no key because the answer is the word printed on the page.

Do these phonics worksheets work for Letters and Sounds, Common Core and A4 paper?

Yes for both paper sizes: choose US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 (210 × 297 mm). The lists follow the CVC, digraph and blend stages of Letters and Sounds and Common Core, but they are not sorted by letter set. For a scheme's exact words, tick the ones you need or type them into Your own words. For England's Year 1 phonics screening check (40 words, a mix of real and pseudo-words), type practice words, including made-up ones, yourself.
