How it compares
- Canva
- Far more design freedom and fonts, but you need an account to download and you build the writing lines yourself.
- Word or Google Docs
- Free if you own them, but you have to find a dotted font and draw the lines; dotted lines in Word is a common search for a reason.
- Etsy printables
- Pretty ready-made packs, but the words are fixed and you pay for every pack; here you type your own text.
Make handwriting practice sheets with a model, dotted tracing and empty lines
Three things decide whether a practice sheet actually gets used: a clear model, easy tracing and the right line size.
Handwriting practice sheets with a black model, dotted tracing and empty lines
Type your text and every line becomes a set: one black model line, one dotted tracing line and one to six empty lines to copy on. Prefer outline or light gray tracing? Switch the style. Long sentences wrap onto the next line by words, so letters are never squeezed.

A school print font and three line heights for every age
School print is Andika, a typeface with a single-story a and g designed for literacy teaching. Choose small, medium or large bands (about 5.5, 6.5 or 7.5 mm) between the solid top line, the dotted midline and the baseline, so one tool covers kindergarten to adult copywork.

Chinese, pinyin, kana and Hangul grids on the same page
Switch to Tian Zi Ge, Mi Zi Ge, pinyin four-line or a pinyin-to-Hanzi quiz. Tone-mark pinyin is added automatically unless you type your own. Six line colors, US Letter or A4, and a PDF without a watermark.

How to make handwriting practice sheets in five steps
From a blank page to a printed sheet in about a minute.
Type the text you want to practice
Enter a word list, a child's name, a poem line or a quote in the Text to practice box. Press Enter for a new group; long lines wrap by themselves. The preview updates as you type.
- Short and meaningful beats long: a sentence the writer cares about is easier to keep practising.
- Keep capital letters as you want them taught; the sheet copies your text exactly.
Pick handwriting lines and a practice mode
Handwriting lines with a dotted midline suit English. Choose Model, trace, copy for a black line, a dotted line and empty lines, or Trace and copy to skip the black model. Use letter boxes for single letters and sight words.
- Use Dotted letters for beginners and Outline letters for older writers.
- 1–2 empty lines per model keeps a sheet short enough to finish.
Choose line height and font
Large bands (about 7.5 mm) suit kindergarten and first grade, medium (6.5 mm) suits grades 2–3 and most beginners, small (5.5 mm) suits older children and adults. School print has a single-story a and g like many early reading books.
- Common US school paper is ruled 5/8 in (about 16 mm) in grade 1 and 1/2 in (about 13 mm) in grades 2–3; large and medium are close to those.
- The UK National Handwriting Association sells guides with 4, 5 or 6 mm spacing for small letters.
Set paper and check the preview
Under Page settings choose US Letter or A4 and portrait or landscape, and decide whether to show the Name and Date header. Scroll the preview: every page that will print is shown.
- US and Canada use Letter; most other countries use A4.
- Landscape fits long sentences on fewer lines.
Print at 100% or download the PDF
Choose Print, Download PDF or Download PNG. In the print dialog set the scale to 100% (actual size) and turn off Fit to page, otherwise the line heights change. Plain 20 lb / 75 g paper is fine for pencil.
- Print one page first and check the baseline height with a ruler.
- Use a soft pencil (HB or 2B) and sharpen it often so the line stays easy to trace.
Handwriting practice sheets generator FAQ
Straight answers before you print.
Yes. It costs nothing, needs no account and adds no watermark to the PDF, PNG or printout. Everything is created in your browser, so the text you type is not uploaded.
Type or paste your words into the Text to practice box, keep the default Handwriting lines template, and press Print or Download PDF. Each line of text becomes a black model line, a dotted tracing line and empty lines to copy on. Change the practice mode, tracing style, font and line height if you want something different.
Yes. Dotted letters are the default tracing style: the model is a solid black line and the line under it is made of dots. You can switch to outline letters or a light gray fill, or turn the model line off with Trace and copy mode.
It depends on the writer. The tool offers about 7.5 mm (large), 6.5 mm (medium) and 5.5 mm (small) per band. For comparison, US primary paper is commonly ruled 5/8 in (about 16 mm) in grade 1 and 1/2 in (about 13 mm) in grades 2–3 with a dotted midline, and the UK National Handwriting Association sells guides with 4, 5 or 6 mm spacing for small letters. Start with medium and move up or down after one sheet.
Yes. Pick the Adult handwriting practice template, paste a quote or a paragraph you actually write by hand, use small lines and outline tracing, and copy it slowly with the pencil resting on the baseline. Occupational therapy advice, including that of the UK National Handwriting Association, is to practice little and often rather than in long sessions: 5 to 15 minutes a day is a common recommendation.
Use US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) in the United States and Canada and A4 (210 × 297 mm) almost everywhere else. The generator supports both in portrait and landscape, and the default follows your language. Set the print scale to 100% either way.
Yes for print letters, because the lines do not depend on handedness. There is no mirrored layout, so left-handed writers should place the model line above where they copy and angle the paper to suit their writing hand, as pediatric occupational therapy guides such as Lurie Children's recommend.
Not joined cursive yet. The font options are school print, Arial print, sans serif and Kai for Chinese; all print separate letters. School print uses a single-story a and g, which is close to the first letter shapes many children learn.
Yes. Switch the paper template to Tian Zi Ge or Mi Zi Ge for Chinese characters, pinyin four-line or the pinyin quiz for pinyin, or a blank square grid for Japanese kana and Korean Hangul. Tone-mark pinyin is added automatically for Chinese text unless you type your own.
No. The sheet is drawn in your browser and PDF, PNG and print are made on your device, so a child's name or private text stays with you.
